Quick Overview

“100 Years of the Republic of Estonia” traces the development of Estonian nationalism from the birth of national thought to the national politics which, in turn, led to the creation of an independent state. A detailed overview has been given of the winning of Estonia’s sovereignty and the War of Independence, birth pains of the statehood and the years of the creation of the republic. Stressing the role of the parliaments (the Riigikogu), the book views Estonia’s politics, economy and culture, and gives an overview of the important events during the first period of independence. The background is formed by Europe and the world in which Estonia had to cope. The book praises progress, but failures have not been forgotten and mistakes have not been whitewashed. The first volume deals with the loss of independence and the trials related to World War II in the Estonian land, and it ends with a description of an attempt by a new government led by Otto Tief to restore Estonia’s sovereignty. The book contains a number of photographs, charts, and a list of persons.
