Quick Overview

The second volume of the book “100 Years of the Republic of Estonia” deals with the fate of the Estonian state and people during the period of the Soviet occupation and in exile in the free world, the restoration of independence and the reconstruction of a modern state from the end of the 20th century to 2018. The period of occupation is viewed from Estonia’s point of view, but it is also framed by the various periods of the Soviet empire, the changes affecting opportunities for Estonians to contribute to the development of their own state and keep Estonian nationalism intact. The part about the restored Republic of Estonia is divided into chapters corresponding to each parliament (the Riigikogu); more attention is paid to internal and external politics, rapid changes in legislation, general economic trends and important events that influenced and shaped Estonia’s statehood. The book contains a number of photographs, the compositions of the governments presented in charts, and a list of persons.
